Bank Watch: J.P. Morgan gains on analysts earnings estimates

Stocks finished the day mixed. The Dow Jones suffered its fifth straight loss, down 25.41 points at 8,448.56. The S&P 500 gained 1.53 points to 871.79, and the Nasdaq gained 7.67 points to end the day at 1,546.46. Financial stocks ended the day mostly in the positive.

J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. was up after analysts increased expectations for the bank's earnings to 2 cents a share. Earnings for J.P. Morgan are due out Thursday. Citigroup Inc. ended the day up after Vikram Pandit took back his promise to keep Citigroup together as a giant financial supermarket and announced a major reorganization. Capital One Financial Corp. ended the day up, even though William Blair & Co. analyst David Long cut his fourth-quarter and 2009 earnings estimates for the bank down to 55 cents per share from 65 cents per share. - Maria Woehr
