Stocks were up Wednesday as lawmakers debated the proposed $825 billion economic
stimulus plan and
"bad bank" plan. The Dow gained 124.97 points to 8,299.70, the
S&P 500 jumped 20.38 points to 866.09, and the Nasdaq was up 43.64 points at 1,548.54.

Wells Fargo & Co. stock was up even though the bank reported a
quarterly loss of $2.55 billion. State Street Corp. stock was up. The bank
announced that assets under administration serviced by its private equity fund team grew by 60% in 2008. Citigroup Inc. has named Mike Corbat
interim chief executive of Citi
Holdings, the "bad" portion of the company. Bank of America Corp. is up even though its management and board
are under pressure from shareholders after the losses from Merrill Lynch & Co.'s integration and former Merrill Lynch CEO John Thain's firing.
