Decade of The Deal, The Deal magazine and TheDeal.comHard to believe, but we've been at this for 10 years.

When we launched The Daily Deal newspaper (and the attendant thedailydeal.com) on Sept. 15, 1999, M&A was surging, private equity was in ascendance, and the IPO markets churned out paper millionaires by the day. While other news outlets (from our ink-stained competitors to those newfangled tools of the time: Web sites) all covered bits and pieces of the proceedings, we were the only publication then trying to ascribe unifying themes to what we defined as the Deal Economy.

Ten years on, and our mission has only slightly changed. Instead of defining the deal economy, we lately feel that we first need to find the deal economy. It's out there somewhere, in the fine print of the TARP bailout, in the medicine cabinets of the Pfizer Inc.-Wyeth deal and perhaps even in the $1,000 waste bin in John Thain's old office. Our readers are 10 years wiser now and have moved beyond newspapers and Web sites to rely on a variety of information sources to make critical business decisions. We have grown with our readers by constantly evolving our digital presence, adding blogs, video and event offerings to our mix. And for our 10th birthday, we have launched The Deal Pipeline, a premium news and data service to help you find the deal economy as well.

We're using all these new newfangled tools in our Decade of The Deal topic center. In Decade of The Deal, we will delve into our past throughout 2009 and see if we can find any clues to the future. We'll be taking a snapshot of each year of our history, studying some of the notable themes and lessons learned by delving into our Deal archives in Pipeline.  Editor in chief Robert Teitelman also offers his musings on the year that was in The Deal magazine and right here at TheDeal.com/decade.

We're also launching a Decade of The Deal video series, wherein notable dealmakers will share their thoughts on times gone by. In our first installment, Fred Wilson, Union Square Ventures, takes us back to the heady tech boom and offers his insights on lessons learned. All of this leads up to our actual birthday in September, when we will surely party like its 1999 (assuming 2009 is a bit kinder than 2008).
