 More dismal layoff news. The Labor Department announced that initial claims for state unemployment insurance benefits rose to 588,000 last week from 585,000 the week before. That makes the total number of people on unemployment 4.776 million, the highest reading since the Labor Department began keeping records in 1967. Here are the latest layoff announcements in the finance industry.

- Northern Trust Corp. is shutting down all 17 of its exchange-traded funds, causing an undetermined amount of job losses.
- First National Bank will eliminate close to 350 jobs over the next few months.
- BBVA Compass Bank plans to lay off 80 employees in the Rio Grande
Valley of Texas.
- Ferris, Baker Watts, owned by Royal Bank of Canada Wealth Management, is eliminating 119 jobs and offices across the Maryland.
