International Bank Watch: Short sellers target Lloyds as ban lifts

International stocks are up Tuesday. Japan's Nikkei 225 Average closed up 37.71 at 9080.84, and the FTSEurofirst 300 index increased 59.28 points to 4638.92. Financial stocks were mixed, mostly because U.K. financial companies no longer have protection from short-selling.

The stocks of many U.K. financial institutions including HSBC Holdings plc and Lloyds TSB Group plc were down. Lloyds TSB is apparently being pummeled as a target of short sellers. Meanwhile, HSBC had its 2009 earnings estimate cut 21% by Deutsche Bank AG Monday. - Maria Woehr
