Goldman Sachs Group Inc.'s and Morgan Stanley's stocks were hit Thursday. However, the two firms are enduring the losses, outpacing commercial lenders. Morgan Stanley has climbed 30% this year while Goldman Sachs has gained 7%. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs' Lloyd Blankfein says it was asked by the New York Fed last fall to help look for a "private market solution" for insurer American International Group Inc., which seems to be sinking lower below a dollar every day.

AIG said it will cooperate fully with the U.K. Serious Fraud Office, which Thursday announced the launch of an inquiry into the U.K. business operations of certain subsidiaries of AIG Financial Products Corp. There are also rumors that the Bank of China Ltd. has decided not to bid for AIG's Asian life insurance unit, American International Assurance. - Maria Woehr
