EA chief: Downturn clears away 'junk'

CEO John Riccitiello suggested to an audience at the DICE gaming confab in Las Vegas. According to gaming site Gamasutra, the exec said the current downturn is a blessing in disguise that will help clear away the video game "junk" that fills retail shelves.

"Junk is hard to compete with," Gamasutra quote Riccitiello as saying. "We did get fat in too many places. It seemed like anyone who could draw a guy with a gun with a crayon could get funded. At least for EA, we got a little too fat, and a little too reliant on where things were."

Maybe it's more fair to say Riccitiello is looking for a silver lining, but tell that to the 11% of EA's work force that were recently handed pink slips. - Olaf de Senerpont Domis
