Finance Layoffs: J.P. Morgan, Bank of America and more

The U.S. Labor Department announced 5.112 million Americans, a record number, are receiving unemployment benefits. Around 114,000 jobs were lost by Feb. 14. Initial claims for state unemployment insurance benefits increased to a seasonally adjusted 667,000 in the week ended Feb. 21, according to CNBC. Many of the layoffs were in the finance industry, and unfortunately for bankers the layoff announcements keep piling up. Here's the latest layoff rumors and reports.

  • J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM) is axing 12,000 jobs, mostly from its acquisition of Washington Mutual.
  • Cuts continue at struggling Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:BAC), with associates in high-grade capital markets the latest to receive notices. Analysts are on the block now through March, and VPs could get the axe in May, according to Dealbreaker.  Meanwhile, BofA concluded another round of cuts at its downtown Milwaukee commercial banking office where at least five people were laid off, according to the Milwaukee Business Journal.
  • San Rafael, Calif.-based WestAmerica Bancorp (NASDAQ:WABC), a Northern California institution with 86 branches, reportedly laid off more than three dozen former County Bank workers.
It's rough out there, but there are jobs. For instance Fidelity Investments plans to add another 80 jobs this year across various businesses.
