Obama pushes stimulus plan

President Barack Obama may not want lobbyists in the White House, but he became the "lobbyist in chief" Friday as he tried to rally support across party lines for his $900 billion economic stimulus package. The president said with 3.6 million people out of work it was "inexcusable and irresponsible" to delay the recovery legislation.

Obama acknowledged the plan was not perfect and pledged to work with lawmakers to refine the measure, which he called "absolutely necessary."

"But broadly speaking, it is the right size," Obama said before signing an executive order to form an outside economic team that will be headed by former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker. "It is the right scope. ... It will take months -- even years -- to renew our economy. But every day that Washington fails to act, that recovery is delayed."

The economic recovery advisory board will provide regular briefings to the president. "I'm not interested in group think," Obama said, explaining why he appointed a group filled with a wide range of political views.

Obama had strong words for Senate Republicans who have resisted his call for swift action on economic stimulus and instead propose greater tax cuts.

"The American people did not choose more of the same," he said. "They did not send us to Washington to get stuck in partisan posturing, or to turn back to the same tried and failed approaches that were rejected in the last election. They sent us here with a mandate for change, and the expectation that we would act."

The Senate is expected to bring the bill to a vote tonight, and Democrats will need at least 60 yeas so it will have to gain the support of at least two Republicans, and probably more. The president was hoping for greater support.

If the bill passes in the Senate, then House and Senate negotiators will meet to iron out their differences. The two chambers will then vote for a single bill. - Donna Block

From: Ari Kirschbaum,

$335 million for STD prevention = 600 million condoms, that's what I call stimulus.

$200 million to re-sod the national park lawn in DC = $180 million more than it should cost if we use non-union labor, AND it'll be twice as fast.

$420 BILLION to union laborers who take twice as long to do the job and cost 4 times more than non-union laborers.

Retarded liberal ideas.

From: arben dinosha,

i think Obama is doing everything he can to impruve the U.S.
