U.S. authorities stand by banks

U.S. regulators issued a joint statement early Monday to make it clear they stand behind the banking system and also stand ready to aid "systemically important" firms.

The statement, which also said the banks will be given a so-called stress test this week to make sure they're in good shape, came on the heels of a report that the government might increase its stake in embattled Citigroup Inc., although the Treasury's announcement named no specific banks.
