AIG revelations cloud rollout

Obama administration officials Sunday were forced to spend appearances on Sunday news shows justifying hundreds of millions of dollars in bonuses that American International Group Inc. it is paying to employees in its troubled financial services division.

AIG, now 80% owned by U.S. taxpayers after nearly $180 billion in federal commitments have been issued over the past six months to rescue the insurance conglomerate, announced Saturday it will pay $165 million in bonuses to executives. The latest revelation of extravagant pay to AIG distracted attention from the new programs aimed at restoring the overall credit market that are just getting under way.
