 The nation's unemployment rate climbed above 8% last month as the economy shed 651,000 jobs, according to MSNBC. Unfortunately, many of those layoffs are in the finance industry. Here's the latest rumors and reports of industry layoffs.

- Providence, R.I.-based Citizens Financial Group, a unit of troubled U.K. lender Royal Bank of Scotland plc (ADR:RBS), is expected to close about 65 branches, according to The Boston Globe.
- Stanford Financial Group, which is at the center of a massive fraud investigation, has notified the state of Florida that it has laid off 174 employees, according to the South Florida Business Journal
- Insurance company Principal Financial Group (NYSE:PFG) has announced that it will cut 60 positions in its health business, including 20 positions in its Des Moines, Iowa, headquarters, according to the Chicago Tribune.
There is some positive news for banks. A survey by Manpower Inc. says that about 74% of financial services providers don't expect to do layoffs in the next quarter, according to Financial Planning. In addition, Robert Half International says that the job market for laid-off bankers has improved slightly in Charlotte, N.C., which is home to Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) and was home to Wachovia before Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE:WFC) acquired it last year.
