Broadcom courts Emulex

Semiconductor maker Broadcom Corp. on Tuesday proposed buying storage equipment maker Emulex Corp. for $764 million and threatened to go hostile if the target doesn't negotiate.

Irvine, Calif.-based Broadcom, which makes chips for such electronics products as set-top boxes and cell phones, issued a statement expressing hope that a friendly deal with Emulex can be reached. But Broadcom also warned in a letter to Emulex's board that it's going to court to reverse what it described as a recently adopted poison pill provision.
