House panel targets predatory lending

Legislation aimed at curbing abusive mortgage tactics cleared a key hurdle Wednesday by passing a House committee. The measure was resurrected after stalling in the Senate nearly two years ago and became a top Democratic priority as lawmakers were pressed to rein in practices blamed for the foreclosure crisis.

Lawmakers offered more than 40 amendments to the measure, which took two days to mark up and finally passed the House Financial Services Committee on a 49-21 vote. Committee Chairman Barney Frank, D-Mass., said the bill will likely hit the House floor next week.
