Intelius beams up people search engine Spock

When we last spoke with Spock Networks Inc. co-founder Jay Bhatti a year ago, the company had raised $8.5 million in venture capital and was looking for more. (The Deal Pipeline subscribers can read more about Spock here.) It was also hoping to carve itself a niche in the shadow of search giant Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG).

Either the search for more VC funding didn't work out as planned, or Spock got an offer it couldn't refuse, but the three-year-old Silicon Valley startup is now part of Intelius, an online directory and background check provider that filed to go public in January 2008. No terms were mentioned.

The news, first reported by TechCrunch and confirmed by VentureBeat, marks an exit for Clearstone Venture Partners and Opus Capital Ventures, Spock's backers. - Olaf de Senerpont Domis
