The puck drops in NHL-Coyotes faceoff

Posted on May 8, 2009 4:29 PM
The battle for the Phoenix Coyotes began in earnest on Thursday as Dewey Ranch Hockey LLC and the National Hockey League fired their first shots at each other in bankruptcy court.

The NHL was blindsided by Dewey's filing and the $212.5 million asset purchase agreement signed with Jim Balsillie, who heads BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. The league has asked the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Arizona in Phoenix to proclaim it the owner of the franchise, allowing it to represent the team and keep it in Phoenix.
