Anglo American pursuit could hurt Lonmin

The takeover battle has just begun, but Lonmin plc, the world's No. 3 platinum producer, is already feeling the fallout from Xstrata plc's attempt to merge with its much larger rival, Anglo American plc.

Anglo American rebuffed Xstrata's $69 billion proposal Monday to create a "merger of equals," calling it "unacceptable," while the mining minister of South Africa, Anglo's largest shareholder, on Tuesday echoed that verdict. But Xstrata's approach was widely regarded as just the starting point, with observers divided on whether CEO Mick Davis would take the proposal directly to shareholders.
