Antitrust agency spat may snag data merger

Halfway to the government's deadline to evaluate a deal on antitrust grounds, federal regulators continue fighting for the right to investigate a possible takeover of Data Domain Inc. The lag could end up scotching what could be a $1.8 billion acquisition.

Despite promises by the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice to work smoothly on the antitrust front, neither agency has ceded its claim to review a purchase of Data Domain, whose shareholders are being courted by rivals NetApp Inc. and EMC Corp.
