British American light up with Indonesian deal

British American Tobacco plc agreed Wednesday to pay $494 million for an initial 85% stake in PT Bentoel Internasional Investama Tbk to expand in the developing and lightly regulated Indonesian tobacco market.

The sellers include conglomerate Rajawali Group. British American will follow the initial purchase with a general offer to all shareholders at 873 rupiah (9 cents) per share, a 20% premium over Bentoel's Tuesday closing price.
