Since the competition won't give credit where credit is due, we'll do it ourselves. Cecile Kohrs Lindell's May 29 scoop about the Department of Justice's investigation into Silicon Valley's hiring practices was followed this week first by The Washington Post, then by The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times -- all without mentioning that The Deal had it first. The story was also picked up by bloggers and Internet publishers such as Cnet.
Lindell's piece revealed that DOJ is examining whether technology firms have engaged in illegal collusion by agreeing not to poach each other's employees. Companies receiving inquiries from the agency include Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG), Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), as well as biotech giant Genentech Inc. (NYSE:DNA). The
New York Times did an excellent June 3 follow-up quoting a couple of Silicon
Valley execs who confirmed that many firms adhere to a tacit agreement not to
raid each other's employee ranks. - Bill McConnell
