Dealmaker to run for governor of Maine

otten,les125x100.jpgDealmaker and entrepreneur Les Otten, who once owned part of the Boston Red Sox, is now looking to add governor to his resume. Otten, currently the CEO of alternative energy company Maine Energy Systems, announced Tuesday his intention to run for governor as a Republican.

Otten, who as the former CEO of American Skiing Co. rolled up most of Northern New England's ski resorts, intends to focus his campaign on renewable energy, job creation, efficient government and leadership, according to his Web site.

Otten has tapped another dealmaker to help him run his campaign. TD Banknorth Inc. chairman William J. Ryan, who turned the tiny Maine bank into one of New England's largest before selling it to Canada's TD Bank Financial Group, will act as treasurer of Otten's campaign.

Despite the dealmaking prowess of Otten and Ryan, Otten will have to jostle with nine other candidates -- most of which are also Republicans. However, Otten has a leg up on his rivals, having been associated with the ownership that brought a World Series title back to New England after 86 years. - Matthew Wurtzel
