DOJ signals headwinds for airline deals

Posted on June 29, 2009 5:18 PM
The U.S. Justice Department strongly opposes granting antitrust immunity allowing Continental Airlines Inc. to join the international Star Alliance. The DOJ's stance, outlined in a filing late Friday with the Transportation Department, is the clearest signal yet of the difficulties airlines will likely have if they contemplate dealmaking during the Obama administration.

In the filing, Justice lambasted Continental's request to join UAL Corp.'s United Air Lines Inc. and others in the alliance, saying the airlines have offered "little in the way" of consumer benefits for an arrangement that DOJ believes could harm competition on domestic routes and to international destinations including Canada and China.
