 The Labor Department announced that the unemployment rate is now at 9.4% and that layoffs are decreasing, but there is still bad news for bankers Friday. There are more rumors and reports of layoffs at several companies in finance, including: Ramius LLC-Cowen Group Inc. (NYSE:COWN), Fidelity Investments, Principal Financial Group (NYSE:PFG) and Silverton Bank. - The Ramius LLC-Cowen Group merger could result in layoffs in the firms' administrative and information technology services. The firm also plans to close four funds, according to The Wall Street Journal.
- Fidelity Investments has laid off 45 people in Merrimack,N.H. The
layoffs affected the company's human resources division. A spokesman
said employees were told in September that the business strategy for
its HR division would be changing, according to Layoff Tracker.
- Principal Financial Group laid off 220 employees Wednesday. "As part of an ongoing review of our business, we made the
decision to eliminate approximately 140 positions in Des Moines and
approximately 80 positions in other locations, primarily in the
retirement business," said Susan Houser, director of media relations
for Principal told the The Grand Island Independent.
