Job seekers in the finance industry are likely still feeling some pain as the Labor Department announced Thursday that the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits for the first time rose last week and the total number receiving payments increased. This means that hopes for a turnaround in the labor market may take longer than expected.
Overall, initial jobless claims jumped 15,000 to 627,000 for the week ended June 20 from a revised 612,000 the week before, according to the Labor Department. Economists expected a drop to 600,000 claims, according to Thomson Reuters. The total number of people collecting unemployment insurance rose 29,000 to 6.74 million from the previous week.
