FTC could lose major consumer duties

FTC could lose major consumer duties President Obama's plan for overhauling financial services regulation calls for stronger protections for consumers against inappropriate and possibly harmful credit products. The Federal Trade Commission already has duties in that area, but it didn't exactly get a ringing endorsement from the White House.

In fact, the most direct impact on the FTC if Congress enacts the administration's suggestions would be to strip the FTC of responsibility for important consumer protections in the financial arena and move them to a new agency, the Consumer Financial Protection Agency.
