genachowski,julius125x100.jpgThe Senate late Thursday confirmed Julius  to be chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. The former FCC lawyer and tech dealmaker is expected to be sworn in as early as Monday after President Obama formally makes the executive appointment.

Genachowski is also co-founder and managing director of LaunchBox Digital and VC firm Rock Creek Ventures, and he is a special adviser at buyout shop General Atlantic Partners. He was a senior executive for eight years at IAC/InterActiveCorp (NASDQ:IACI), where his positions included chief of business operations and general counsel.

Genachowski will take the seat of Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein, who is stepping down to become head of the Department of Agriculture's Rural Utilities Service -- a program receiving billions of stimulus bill dollars to provide broadband to rural Americans. Adelstein has served on the commission since December 2002. Genachowski's term will run until June 30, 2013.

Also, confirmed Thursday was the reappointment of Republican Commissioner Robert McDowell.

The confirmations followed Obama's announcement earlier Thursday that he was nominating Meredith Atwell Baker to fill the empty second Republican FCC seat and formally nominated Mignon L. Clyburn of South Carolina for the third Democratic seat. Obama had previously announced his intention to nominate Clyburn. Once Baker and Clyburn are confirmed, the FCC will be returned to its full five-member complement. Democrat Michael Copps, who has been acting chairman since the change in administrations, is remaining at the commission.

Genachowski said he's looking forward to starting work: "The FCC has the inspiring mission of ensuring that our communications networks and technologies serve the nation's needs and improve the lives of all Americans."

The plaudits for Genachowski came from all colors of the FCC's spectrum. Jerry James, CEO for Comptel, the trade group of competitors to the major telecom carriers, said, "We look forward to working with the commission to ensure that these goals are met and consumers are rewarded with competitive options for advanced communications services."

Josh Silver, executive director of Free Press, an organization opposing media consolidation, said:

The agenda awaiting Genachowski on day one is enormous but there is no doubt that he is the right man for the job. ... We are confident that the public interest will be at the forefront of the Genachowski FCC, and look forward to working with him. It's time for the FCC to tackle some of the pressing issues that have been put on hold, such as bringing fast, affordable, open broadband to everyone, spurring innovation and competition and diversifying media ownership.
