GM saw little choice on liability

In accepting liability for future product defects, General Motors Corp. bowed to pressure from state attorneys general to keep its expedited bankruptcy on track.

The automaker, which filed for Chapter 11 protection on June 1, hopes to win approval for a government-backed plan to divide the company in two and have its healthy assets quickly exit bankruptcy.
