When Providence bought a 25% ownership stake for $300 million in ZeniMax 18 months ago, the Rockville, Md.-based company announced plans to put some of the capital to work in dealmaking to expand its portfolio of games. (The Deal Pipeline subscribers may read more here.) ZeniMax is primarily known for publishing award-winning role-playing games such as "Fallout 3" and "The Elder Scrolls" series. At the time of the announcement, speculation naturally tended toward the common wisdom that ZeniMax might seek to add titles in other genres, such as the popular first-person shooter category. By purchasing Dallas-based Id Software, ZeniMax is gaining access to one of the pioneers of the genre, John Carmack, a founder of Id, who will remain technical director of the game developer. Carmack, along with other key Id employees, reportedly have signed long-term employment contracts as part of the deal. In addition to Id, Carmack is a co-founder of privately held Armadillo Aerospace, which is a competitor in the X Prize civilian aerospace contests. - Matthew Wurtzel
