Senate panel takes up Genachowski nomination

genachowski,julius125x100.jpgDealmaker Julius Genachowski moved Tuesday one step closer to taking his post as Obama's chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, and the attorney-turned-entrepreneur received a strong endorsement from opponents of media consolidation during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Commerce Committee.

Additionally, Republican FCC member Robert McDowell also appeared before the committee to testify on behalf of his reappointment. However, Genachowski was the main attraction of the confirmation hearings as he is widely expected to roll back some of the media ownership rules enacted after eight years of Republican control and constant bickering between the chairman's office and Democrats who now control Congress.

Revisions to the FCC's media ownership rules likely will be a priority during Genachowski's term once a federal appeals court rules on pending challenges to deregulation passed by previous Chairman Kevin Martin.

Josh Silver, executive director of anti-consolidation group Free Press, was effusive in its praise for Genachowski, who was a fundraiser for the Obama campaign, and has been a partner at venture firm Rock Creek Ventures and a special adviser at buyout shop General Atlantic Partners. He also was FCC chief counsel during the tenure of Clinton FCC Chairman Reed Hundt.

Silver said:

"Julius Genachowski is the right person to lead the FCC and carry out President Obama's plan to get fast, affordable, open Internet to every home and business in America. He has a long history of experience, an expert understanding of the issues, and strong support across the public and private sectors.

"For years, the FCC has been stuck in reverse on critical issues like broadband competition and media ownership. We're confident that Genachowski's commitment to the public interest, his entrepreneurial eye, and his open, data-driven approach will finally move us forward."

Commerce Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller, D-W.V., criticized the previous Republican-led FCC for pursuing a deregulatory agenda and lauded Genachowski. Rockefeller said he was "thoroughly impressed" with Genachowski. - Bill McConnell
