Legal fisticuffs over TV rights to Dick Tracy should take place closer to Hollywood than to Wilmington, Del., Warren Beatty argues in recent court papers. Beatty and bankrupt media company Tribune Co. have been at odds over the Chicago comic-strip detective. Tribune says Beatty, who played the Chicago detective in the 1990 film, has lost film and television rights to Dick Tracy because he did not make a follow-up within a negotiated time frame. Beatty counters that he still has rights because he started principal photography on a TV special between Nov. 8, 2008, and Nov. 12, 2008, sneaking in before a Nov. 20 deadline. The shoot took place at Walt Disney Co. (NYSE:DIS) studios in Burbank, Calif., Beatty's court papers state, and most of the actor's witnesses are in the state. Tribune says lost income from the rights could total tens of millions of dollars. - Chris Nolter Read the latest court filings See Dealscape post on Beatty/Tribune fight over Tracy See Dealwatch on Tribune Co.
