Acorda, Biogen clinch licensing deal

Posted on July 1, 2009 5:38 PM
Acorda Therapeutics Inc. of Hawthorne, N.Y. said Wednesday it has sold partial rights to its experimental multiple sclerosis drug to Biogen Idec Inc. for $110 million.

The initial fee is uncommonly large for a biotech licensing deal. Only a handful of up-front payments top $100 million each year, an indication that the drug Fampridine-SR has a good chance of coming to market. Biogen Idec gains all commercial rights outside the United States. Fampridine-SR has completed Phase 3 trials and has entered the European regulatory process for approval, though it's unclear if it will gain clearance this year. Acorda keeps U.S. rights. The Food and Drug Administration said it would finish its regulatory review in October.
