Bank of Wyoming fails; bank failures hit 53

Untitled Document pignoose125x100.jpgBank of Wyoming was seized by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. on Friday, bringing the total number of failed banks in 2009 to 53.

According to the FDIC, Central Bank & Trust will assume Bank of Wyoming's $67 million in deposits and purchase $55 million of the failed bank's $70 million in assets. The bank had just one branch and was the first bank in Wyoming to fail this year. Illinois has the most bank failures so far, having six failures last weekend (see list of failed banks below).

The FDIC has been preparing for an increase in bank failures. There are 305 banks reportedly on the FDIC's problem list. The media has identified many of the banks that could go under.
