Bernard L. Madoff has arrived at his new home: an eight-by-eight cell at the Federal Correctional Complex in Butner, N.C.
The Butner complex is located about 45 miles northwest of Raleigh and includes
two medium-security facilities, a low-security facility and a hospital.
It's unknown if Madoff will ultimately stay in Butner, but
CNBC is reporting that the facility will be his final destination. According to the
AP, the complex is best known for its hospital to treat elderly or ill prisoners.
Madoff might not be so lonely. He will join John Rigas, founder of Adelphia Communications, and his son and CFO, Tim Rigas, who were convicted on multiple charges of securities fraud, conspiracy to commit bank fraud and bank fraud.
In the wee hours of Tuesday morning, the convicted crook checked into the U.S. Penitentiary in Atlanta, which served as a temporary holding facility.
If you're interested, his movements can be tracked on the Federal Bureau of Prisons Web site; he is listed in Bureau of Prisons records as prisoner number 61727-054.
To send the 71-year-old swindler a welcome home note or a "hope you rot in prison" haiku, e-mail madoffmail@gmail.com, and the founders of
Madoff Mail will send along your missive in a care package.
