Crabtree & Evelyn will try to save its skin

Hoping to wash away burdensome leases and unprofitable stores, bath and body products retailer Crabtree & Evelyn Ltd. has slipped into bankruptcy protection.

The Woodstock, Conn., subsidiary of Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad filed for Chapter 11 on Wednesday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York in Manhattan looking to exfoliate its business and survive the slump in consumer spending that's hurting many of the nation's retailers.
