The Labor Department's results are out. Employers cut 467,000 jobs in June, and the
unemployment rate rose to 9.5%. That means the number of people on unemployment is around 6.8 million, according to
CNBC. Many of those that are unemployed worked in the finance industry. Rumors and reports of
layoffs at GE Capital, Lloyds Banking Group plc (NYSE:LYG) and Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE:WFC) swamped reports earlier this week (see links below). A small bank in Florida is also reporting layoffs. Oculina Bank has laid off four employees in the past couple of weeks, according to
TCPalm.
It's a tough employment market for
financial professionals, but there are
jobs as companies are
hiring. In fact, Royal Bank of Canada (NYSE:RY) is hiring in Europe, according to
Hedgeweek. Jefferies Group has also been
aggressively hiring. Here's our
