German union girds for Opel talks

Germany's biggest labor union said Friday it is steeling itself for tough negotiations with the new owner of Adam Opel GmbH while European governments promised that any state aid extended to General Motors Co.'s European unit would adhere to competition guidelines.

Union IG Metall said it would not accept any layoffs or the closure of any German plants after GM decided Thursday to sell a 55% stake in Opel, of Rüsselsheim, Germany, to Canadian auto supplier Magna International Inc. and its bid partner, Russia's Sberbank.
