pignoose125x100.jpgThree more banks were seized by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. over the weekend, bringing the total number of banks that failed this year to 92.

The three banks that failed this weekend include Chicago, Ill.-based Corus Bank, Washington state-based Venture Bank and Minnesota-based Brickwell Community Bank. The three failures cost the federal deposit insurance fund more than $1.7 billion.

Corus Bank is the second-largest bank failure this year with $7 billion in assets and $7 billion in deposits. The bank's deposits were assumed by MB Financial Bank. MB Financial agreed to purchase roughly $3 billion of its assets at a premium of 0.2%, according to the FDIC.

Venture Bank, with total assets of $970 million and total deposits of $903 million, is the third bank in Washington state to fail this year. It was acquired by First-Citizens Bank & Trust Co. in a share loss transaction.

Brickwell Community Bank, which had $72 million in assets and $63 million in deposits, is the third bank to collapse in Minnesota this year. CorTrust Bank assumed the bank's assets.

This quarter the number of institutions on the FDIC's "problem" bank list grew to 416 from 305 the prior quarter. The FDIC also reported that its insurance fund balance is $10.4 billion plus the $32 billion set aside for expected failures over next year. The FDIC expects $70 billion in losses due to failed banks over the next five years. By 2012, SeekingAlpha is predicting that 500 to 800 banks will have failed. Over here at Dealscape, we predict that if there are three to seven failures a week the rest of the year, then the FDIC will at most seize another 133 banks, making the grand total of failures for 2009 214. - Maria Woehr
