stock_ticker125x100.jpgWelcome to Deal Stocks. In the news Tuesday are ING Group NV (NYSE:ING),  UBS (NYSE:UBS), Bank of New York Mellon Corp. (NYSE:BK) , NBC Universal, PepsiCo Inc. (NYSE:PEP), United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) and General Electric Co. (NYSE:GE).

Stocks finished mixed after a dismal consumer-confidence report was released. The Dow closed up 14.21, or .14%, to 9,882.17 while the Nasdaq closed down 25.76, or 1.20%, to 2,116.09.

  
 
  • IAC/InteractiveCorp (NASDAQ:IACI) CEO Barry Diller said on an earnings call that he may be willing to sell his company's search unit, Ask.com.
  • ING Group NV (NYSE:ING) shares are taking a pounding after the company announced plans to split in two to repay the state bailout it received last year. (The Deal Pipeline subscribers can read the full story here.)
  • Bank of New York Mellon Corp. (NYSE:BK) is eying acquisitions in Europe, according to Reuters.
  • PepsiCo Inc. (NYSE:PEP) won European Union regulatory approval to purchase two bottlers, Pepsi Bottling Group Inc. (NYSE:PBG) and PepsiAmericas Inc. (NYSE:PAS), deals that will help it cut costs and boost profits, according to Reuters.
  • United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) may be the front-runner in the bidding for General Electric Co.'s (NYSE:GE) fire alarm and surveillance systems unit, according to a report by Bloomberg.
  • France's Dassault Systemes SA unveiled one of the biggest European IT deals of the year, agreeing to pay $600 million for operations and contracts associated with the product lifecycle management software division of IBM Corp.   • In its third deal announcement in the past month, Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) said Tuesday it would buy privately held security software company ScanSafe for about $183 million to expand into the Web-based security market. Read the full story in Pipeline (subscribers only).
  • Barclays plc (NYSE:BCS) is in talks with Italy's third-biggest lender, Banca Monte dei Paschi de Siena SpA, that could lead to the acquisition of a network of 135 branches, a source with knowledge of the talks said Tuesday. Read the full story in The Deal's Pipeline (subscribers only).
  • IBM Corp. (NYSE:IBM) executive Robert Moffat's alleged role in the Galleon Group insider trading scandal has shocked former colleagues and acquaintances. This Bloomberg article quotes a few of them and also offers a profile of the long-time IBMer.
In economic news:

  • The VIX rose to near 25, according to CNBC.
  • The Conference Board reported that its index of consumer attitudes slipped to 47.7 in October, according to CNBC.
  • The government will auction off  $44 billion in two-year notes.
