GrainCorp buys United Malt

Posted on October 6, 2009 3:30 PM
Australia's GrainCorp Ltd. on Tuesday said it would buy private equity-owned United Malt Holdings Ltd. for A$757 million ($662 million) including debt to transform itself into an international agribusiness.

The sellers are Castle Harlan Inc., of New York, and Sydney affiliate Champ Private Equity, which created the malt manufacturer from 2006 acquisitions from ConAgra Foods Inc. in the U.S. and South Africa's Tiger Brands Ltd. United Malt is the fourth-largest commercial malt maker, serving the brewing industry and whiskey makers, while GrainCorp of Sydney is Australia's largest grains handler.
