Bank failures bulk up to 115

pignoose125x100.jpgIt looks like bank failures are picking up. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. has closed about 10 banks a month so far this year, but that number is growing. The FDIC closed nine banks this weekend alone -- plus commercial lender CIT Group Inc. (NYSE:CIT) filed for bankruptcy. That brings the total number of banks that have failed this year to 115.

The nine banks were all owned by parent company FBOP Corp. of Oak Park, Ill.

The banks closed were Community Bank of Lemont in Lemont, Ill.; North Houston Bank in Houston; Madisonville State Bank in Madisonville, Texas; Bank USA NA in Phoenix; California National Bank in Los Angeles; San Diego National Bank in San Diego; Pacific National Bank in San Francisco; Park National Bank in Chicago; and Citizens National Bank in Teague, Texas. The banks had combined assets of $19.4 billion and deposits of $15.4 billion.

U.S. Bancorp's (NYSE:USB) subsidiary U.S. Bank NA of Minneapolis assumed all the deposits and most of the assets of all nine institutions. U.S. Bancorp is one of the regional banks benefiting the most from the crisis, notes a recent feature story in The Deal magazine.

This weekend's failures cost the FDIC's deposit insurance fund $2.5 billion. There reportedly are 416 banks on the FDIC's "problem" list. CreditSights predicts that 1,100 banks could fail between 2008 and 2011, according to MarketWatch. So far in the last two years only 140 banks have failed. In October, 20 banks failed, and if that pace continues, then it is likely we could reach over 150 failures by the end of the year. - Maria Woehr
