Bank failures reach 120

pignoose125x100.jpgThe Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. shut down five banks on Friday, bringing the total number of bank failures this year to 120.

San Francisco-based United Commercial Bank became the fifth-largest bank failure, according to The Wall Street Journal. The bank's $7.5 billion in deposits and $10.2 billion in assets will be taken over by East West Bank of Pasadena, Calif.  The failure will cost the FDIC's deposit insurance fund around $1.4 billion.

The other banks that failed this week included Prosperan Bank, which had $175.6 million in  deposits, which was acquired by Alerus Financial; Gateway Bank of St. Louis' assets of $27.7 million and total deposits of $27.9 million were transferred to Central Bank of Kansas City; and Detroit-based Home Federal Savings Bank, which had total assets of $14.9 million and total deposits of $12.8 million, was acquired by Liberty Bank and Trust Co. of New Orleans. Lastly, United Security Bank of Georgia's total assets of $157 million and deposits of $150 million were acquired by Ameris Bank of Moultrie, Ga. These other four failures cost the FDIC's deposit insurance fund around $132.7 million.

There reportedly are 416 banks on the FDIC's "problem" list. In October, 20 banks failed, but so far this month 14 have failed meaning it's likely that 130 banks could fail by the end of the month, and we could reach over 150 failures by the end of the year. - Maria Woehr
