 Welcome to Deal Stocks. In the news for Tuesday are Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc (NYSE:RBS), Lloyds Banking Group plc (NYSE:LYG), Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE:BRK.A), Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. (NYSE:BNI), Stanley Works Inc. (NYSE:SWK), Black & Decker Corp. (NYSE:BDK), Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO), Vivendi SA, Comcast Corp. (NASADAQ:CMCSA), NBC Universal Inc., General Electric Co. (NYSE:GE), CIT Group Inc. ( OTC:CITGQ.PK), Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:BAC), American International Group Inc. (NYSE:AIG), Kraft Foods Inc. (NYSE:KFT) and Cadbury plc (NYSE:CBY). Stocks fell Tuesday after a Morgan Stanley ( NYSE:MS) downgraded Intel Corp. ( NASDAQ:INTC) to cautious from attractive, according to CNBC. The markets finished mixed as the Dow fell 17.53, or .18%, to 9,771.91 while the Nasdaq inched up 8.12, or .40%, to 2,057.32. - Cablevision Systems Corp. (NYCE:CVC) announced a third-quarter profit of $98.9 million, while the chairman and CEO James Dolan confirmed that his company would spin off its Madison Square Garden unit by year's end.
- Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) has restarted the sale of its stake in China's first joint venture investment bank, China International Capital Corp., which could bring in close to $1 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.
- A massive shakeup of the U.K.'s banking sector got underway on Tuesday as the government announced plans to pump an additional £31.2 billion ($51 billion) into Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc (NYSE:RBS) and Lloyds Banking Group plc (NYSE:LYG) and confirmed European Commission-mandated disposals at the lenders. - Sempra Energy (NYSE:SRE) said Monday that Royal Bank of Scotland Group may have to divest its majority interest in the RBS Sempra Commodities joint venture.
- Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE:BRK.A) is acquiring railroad firm Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. (NYSE:BNI) for $100 a share and $10 billion in assumed debt in a deal that values the company at $44 billion.
- Stanley Works Inc. (NYSE:SWK) announced late Monday a $4.5 billion stock deal to acquire Black & Decker Corp. (NYSE:BDK) in an effort to marry some of the best-known brands in the tool market. (The Deal Pipeline subscribers can read the full story here.)
- Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) continued its buying spree Monday, announcing late in the day that it would pay up to $44.5 million to acquire the set-top box unit of China's DVN Holdings Ltd. (The Deal Pipeline subscribers can read the full story here.)
- TPG Capital is buying a majority interest in Houston natural gas handling services provider Valerus Compression Services LP with a $500 million investment in equity and debt. (The Deal Pipeline subscribers can read the full story here.)
- Vivendi SA in no rush to help Comcast Corp. (NASADAQ:CMCSA) get NBC Universal Inc. Reports that a deal between Comcast and General Electric Co.'s (NYSE:GE) for NBC Universal assume at their peril that Vivendi, which owns 20% of NBC U, is simply along for the ride. - CIT Group Inc.'s (OTC:CITGQ.PK) road to bankruptcy was anything but smooth, but observers expect the lender to exit by early 2010, and with relatively minimal customer attrition. (The Deal Pipeline subscribers can read the full story here.)
- Bank of America Corp.'s (NYSE:BAC) hunt for a new CEO may result in the bank moving its headquarters, which is currently based in Charlotte, N.C.
- Kraft Foods Inc. (NYSE:KFT) reports its third-quarter earnings on Tuesday. Positive results are likely to strengthen its position if it bids to take over Cadbury plc (NYSE:CBY). See the earnings preview here.
