 Welcome to Deal Stocks. In the news Monday are CIT Group Inc. (NYSE:CIT), Encore Acquisition Co. (NYSE:EAC), Denbury Resources Inc. (NYSE:DNR), Bank of New York Mellon Corp.
(NYSE:BK) , Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE), Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE:GS), Comcast Corp. (NASDAQ:CMCSA), General Electric Co. (NYSE:GE), Citigroup
Inc. (NYSE:C) and AXA (NYSE:AXA). Stocks rose on positive manufacturing and pending home sales reports. The Dow gained 0.8%, the Nasdaq was boosted 0.2%, and the S&P 500 increased 0.6%, according to CNBC. - Comcast Corp. (NASDAQ:CMCSA) and General Electric Co. (NYSE:GE) are supposedly near a deal for NBC Universal, in which Vivendi SA would sell its 20% stake in the company. GE would
contribute $12 billion in debt to the new entity and retain 49% ownership, according to The New York Times.
- Bank of New York Mellon Corp.'s
(NYSE:BK) BNY Mellon Asset Management acquired a 20% stake in U.S. private equity investment firm Siguler
Guff & Co., according to Reuters.
- Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) is reportedly thinking of doing a joint venture with
Israel's ProtaliX BioTheraputics Inc. (AMEX:PLX) and could even purchase the company, according to Reuters.
- When Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:ONXX) bought Proteolix Inc. on Oct. 12, (The Deal Pipeline subscription required) it was the first-ever acquisition for the 17-year-old Emeryville, Calif., firm.
- Singapore's state investor Temasek Holdings, Blackstone Group LP (NYSE:BX) and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. are expected to submit bids to purchase AXA's (NYSE:AXA) stake in Chinese life insurer Taikang Life, according to Reuters.
- Calyon Securities banking analyst Mike Mayo said Friday that Citigroup
Inc. (NYSE:C) is likely to write down about $10 billion in deferred-tax assets
in the fourth quarter, according to The Wall Street Journal. The bank reportedly is hoarding cash and has almost doubled it to $244.2 billion since Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. filed for
bankruptcy, according to Bloomberg.
- Deerfield, Ill.-based CF Industries Holdings Inc. (NYSE:CF) is now offering to acquire
Terra Industries Inc. (NYSE:TRA) for $32 in cash and .1034 of a share
of CF Industries common stock for each Terra share (including the $7.50
per share special dividend declared by Terra). The new offer is valued
around $4.1 billion, $200 million higher than the previous offer.
- Following weeks of speculation about how Cisco Systems Inc.
(NASDAQ:CSCO) might react to Tandberg ASA shareholders who are carping
about the networking giant's $3 billion offer for the company, Cisco's
strategy chief Ned Hooper came out with a blog post Monday with a bit
more detail as to why he thinks the price is fair.
- Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE:DAL) and Australia's Virgin Blue Airlines Group received a three-year approval
from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission for a joint
venture where they will coordinate operations between the U.S. and
Australia, including on pricing, revenue management, schedules,
capacity and routes flown.
- The Stanley Works (NYSE:SWK) purchased The Black &
Decker Corporation (NYSE:BDK), in an all-stock
transaction valued at approximately $4.5 billion.
In earnings news: In economic news: - The Institute for Supply Management's factory index rose to
55.7, exceeding expectations, according to Bloomberg.
- Pending home sales rose, and construction spending rose 0.8%, according to CNBC.
