Enzon to sell unit to Sigma-Tau

Enzon Pharmaceuticals Inc. agreed Monday to sell its drug business to a unit of Italian drug company Sigma-Tau SpA for about $327 million to focus on its pipeline and technology platforms.

The Bridgewater, N.J., pharma company issued a statement saying it would receive $300 million in cash when the deal closes, which is expected in the first quarter of 2010. It will also receive as much as $27 million if the operations meet certain milestones and 5% to 10% royalties through 2014.
