The CEO of American Airlines Inc. went public with his company's desire to preserve an alliance with Japan Airlines Corp. amid talk that a rival proposal by Delta Air Lines Inc. might be favored by government officials in charge of JAL's restructuring.
Gerald Arpey, chairman and CEO of American parent AMR Corp., in a speech late monday in Mexico City called JAL "a highly valued member" of American's Oneworld global alliance. The speech was a rare public glimpse into a behind-the-scenes battle between AMR and Delta to solidify ties to a partner that provides access to Japan's domestic market and would give either airline much-needed clout in Asia.
