British baby products maker Maclaren is facing a massive recall on its leading product, strollers. The last time it faced a challenge, it stumbled into receivership.
The 42-year-old company claims its founder, Owen Finlay Maclaren, an aircraft engineer who helped design World War II's famed Spitfire fighters, invented the umbrella stroller because he was dissatisfied with the classical carriages still in use at the time. The lightweight, revolutionary strollers quickly became the rage not only in the U.K. but worldwide. However, by the late 1990s, Maclaren had been surpassed by fancier new designs popularized by celebrities, sending it into receivership in 2001,
notes The Daily Mail.
Today's trouble is far worse than celebrities choosing flashier Bugaboos and other three-wheeled, funky designs. Maclaren strollers -- dating back to 1999 -- will be recalled because a hinge can slice off a child's fingers,
according to the Daily News, which broke the story. The recall was prompted because 12 children have suffered injuries. -
