Takeda takes rights to obesity drugs

Posted on November 3, 2009 5:30 AM
Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd., Japan's biggest drugmaker, agreed Monday to pay $75 million upfront to Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc. to develop and market a variety of its compounds to fight obesity in a deal that could eventually pay $1 billion.

Amylin, a San Diego firm with diabetes drugs Symlin and Byetta on the market, said it has two compounds in Phase 2 development aimed at helping consumers lose weight. The drugs, a combination called Pramlintide/Metreleptin and another called Davalintide, have been in development since 2006, but the firm said it is too soon to estimate when it might seek approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to market them.
