The best-performing hedge funds

It's that time again. Yes folks, back for a second installation are some of the best-performing hedge funds of 2009.

Roll Call: Jan. 15, 2009

Wondering where the Citigroup Inc. nationalization chatter started? Dealbreaker offers an interesting theory. Private equity firms have put the breaks on limited partners selling fund stakes on the secondary market because of tax concerns, but as peHUB explains, where there is a will, there is a way around the restrictions. Dealscape's affiliate Corporate Dealmaker notes that the corporate bond market is beginning to thaw. Deal Journal offers an explanation of how even junk offerings are getting done despite the credit crisis. News Wednesday that Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs would take a leave of absence from the company prompted the...

Roll Call: Jan. 13, 2009

President-elect Barack Obama finally named a FCC chairman nominee, tapping old Harvard Law classmate and venture capitalist Julius Genachowski. The announcement pleased some in the venture community. As confirmation hearings for Obama's Cabinet begin in the Senate, questions are surfacing about Treasury Department nominee Timothy Geithner's housekeeper and taxes. While Democratic congressional leaders call the kerfuffle manageable, Clusterstock asks why no one from the Obama transition team has officially commented on the allegations. Meanwhile, Republican senators aren't the only ones opposed to Geithner's nomination. CNBC personality Jim Cramer continues his campaign against Obama's Treasury Department nominee. The most recent venue...

Roll Call: Dec. 16, 2008

While the world reviles Bernie Madoff's massive Ponzi scheme, Time's Curious Capitalist blog reminds us that Social Security and even U.S. Treasuries basically operate much like Ponzi schemes. Meanwhile, Deal Journal offers a 10-point check list to help investors avoid a Ponzi scheme, and the good news is that Social Security and U.S. Treasury notes pass the test. What do you think Madoff will do now that he's been caught? Dealbreaker is running a poll, where most respondents think he'll quietly accept whatever sentence is doled out, and not go on the lam like Sam Israel. Will the Madoff scandal...

Roll Call: Dec. 15, 2008

So how does Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme compare to almost a century of such frauds? DealBook offers a summation of Charles Ponzi's first such fraud in 1919 and continues with a summation of some of the more notable ones through the years. Not everyone is indignant over the Madoff scandal. Deal Journal's Mean Street columnist Evan Newmark finds some positives in it. It seems Madoff didn't only cheat his clients, but his golf partners too, according to ClusterStock. Madoff's sons were part of the firm, but allegedly are not part of the scandal. Dealbreaker found a video that might explain...

Roll Call: Blagejovich edition

Illinois Governor Rod Blagejovich and his Chief of Staff John Harris were indicted on charges of corruption. There were a few deal angles in the news given the involvement of bankrupt Tribune Co. and some anti-deal activists, leading the financial media to jump on what usually would be a political beat like Custerstock alleging that Rahm Emanuel may have helped the government. It also led to some political reporters treading in the world of financial journalism like Politico's Ben Smith, who suggests Warren Buffett may have been an unnamed participant. Despite being arrested Tuesday, Blagejovich still pulled one out for...

Roll Call: Nov. 7, 2008

While much of the attention is on who will eventually lead Treasury, overlooked are the dealmakers working with President-elect Barack Obama's transition team. (Deal Journal) Nixon Peabody LLP reports that deals with MACs are on the rise. (DealBook) With institutional investors suffering in the public markets, logic might suggest they'd turn to private equity and venture capital for opportunities, but there is anecdotal evidence to suggest the opposite is happening. (peHUB) General Motor Corp.'s Rick Wagoner warns that a GM bankruptcy would have an even worse effect on the economy than a Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. bankruptcy. (Dealbreaker) ...

Roll Call: Nov. 4, 2008

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D.-N.Y., appeared on "Charlie Rose" where he offered the next president, who he assumed would be Sen. Barack Obama, some obvious advice, namely to announce a treasury secretary on Wednesday morning. (DealBook) On the subject of the next treasury secretary, Dealbreaker expanded on Dealscape's suggestion that Obama might choose New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine. (Dealbreaker) Advice seems to be flying all over the place, as peHUB editor Dan Primack offered his readers reasons why it might be dangerous for them to buy Treasury's "refried" mortgages. (peHUB) As the Treasury thinks about expanding its capital injection program...

Roll Call: Oct. 30, 2008

Wednesday, Dealscape used some colorful references to death when writing about the Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.'s bankruptcy. Sadly, the Lehman bankruptcy may have contributed to the death of Bella, a black Labrador Retriever, who worked as a guard dog at Lehman's headquarters, notes Dealbreaker, which alleges that the bankruptcy broke her heart. HarbourVest Partners has backed out of a signed agreement to acquire a large LP stake on the secondary market, peHUB has learned. Portfolio's Felix Salmon asks whether publicly traded buyout shop Blackstone Group LP is itself a buyout target. With deals like Huntsman Corp. and Hexion Specialty...

Roll Call: Dealbreaker provides insight into bankers' thinking

The decision by banks to take steep losses by selling the leveraged debt on their books to private equity firms at a steep discount might not make too much sense to those not in the know. And providing financing to those same buyout shops to buy the debt -- essentially replacing the old debt with new -- may make even less sense (unless you count the nice fat fees the banks will collect from providing new financing). Luckily Dealbreaker has provided some handy insights into the thinking of the sellers' top executives. - George White...
