'Not' peeling back the curtain

For all its promised peeling, a New York Times article about Terra Firma's Guy Hands doesn't reveal anything new.

Permira chair like rabbit in headlights

Damon Buffini, chairman of Permira Advisers, never appeared entirely comfortable in his role as the public face of U.K. private equity, but now that he's stepping aside he can breathe a sigh of relief.

Permira's Sherwood: Only a 'miracle' can prevent big PE write-downs

The bleak predictions coming out of top private equity dealmakers are starting to pile up, as the industry braces for the dismal task of writing down the value of portfolio companies purchased at sky-high valuations in 2006 and 2007, when easy debt made almost any deal seem like it could be profitable. Charles Sherwood, a partner at U.K. buyout shop Permira, predicted that it would take a "mathematical miracle" for any equity value to be left in many of the deals from that heady period, according to the Financial Times....

It is an absurd notion, which luckily The Times admits is a far-fetched idea. However, the story moved forward probably because executives at DaimlerChrysler didn't outright dismiss it, instead saying the company would explore all possible means to reinvigorate the ailing U.S. brand. The Times notes that the current attempt to restructure Chrysler is the second in six years. Interestingly, the last time Chrysler was under the microscope, the press speculated that DaimlerChrysler might amputate the Jeep brand....
