Finance Layoffs: AIG, Lloyds Banking and more

The pain continues in the finance industry as AIG cut 300 while Lloyds slashes 5,000. If that wasn't enough, Calyon analyst Mike Mayo warns if unemployment hits 11% another financial crisis may ensue.

Eric Daniels not idle over APS maneuvering

Lloyds' Eric Daniels might just pull off his plan to shun the government's costly insurance on toxic assets and avoid handing the U.K. a larger stake in the bank.

U.K. banks may need more state aid

Bank of England Governor Mervyn King was the bearer of bad news Tuesday as he told a parliamentary committee that U.K. banks may need yet more government capital. Lloyds TSB Group plc, takeover target HBOS plc and Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc have already agreed to take up to £37 billion ($55.4 billion) of state aid, while Barclays plc angered institutional investors by shunning the state and opting instead to raise £5.8 billion through two pricier securities issues to Middle Eastern backers. But King says the fundraisings may not be enough. He told a Treasury Select Committee that...

Lloyds TSB Group plc Monday raised the forecasted savings from its takeover of HBOS plc and pledged to redeem government debt in the enlarged group next year following reports that a rival bidder for HBOS was circling....

Will Barclays take Russian bank support?

Thanks, but no thanks. That's what Barclays plc said to the U.K. government earlier this month when its peers, Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc, Lloyds TSB Group plc and HBOS plc, accepted a £37 billion ($58 billion) capital injection from the Treasury. "What we are protecting is a right to self-determination," Barclays CEO John Varley told investors on a conference call....

RBS, Lloyds and HBOS push for revision of bailout plan

Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc, Lloyds TSB plc and HBOS plc, the three banks in which the government is proposing to take £9 billion ($15.6 billion) of preference shares, are asking the Treasury to revise the terms of its bailout plans, according to the Financial Times. They fear that the government's condition that they halt dividend payments to shareholders until the preference shares are bought back is driving down their shares prices, making it more likely the state will end up with large holdings in the banks by guaranteeing their fundraisings....

Euro bank executives' golden parachutes are coming to earth

Some would say that it only takes something to happen twice to make it a trend -- at The Deal we usually prefer three as the rule of thumb. So, with the the outgoing chief executives at the Royal Bank of Scotland plc and HBOS plc announcing recently they would forgo their golden parachutes, are these occurrences a growing trend or a surprising anomaly that will wither away with better times?...

Lloyds swallows bigger HBOS

Sometimes size doesn't matter. U.K. bank HBOS plc on Thursday fell to its much smaller peer Lloyds TSB Group plc for a fire-sale price of £12.2 billion ($21.8 billion) in a government-brokered deal designed to avoid a repeat of the Northern Rock plc fiasco....

HBOS leads European selloff

By noon, the U.S. stock market found its bearings (hold that thought?) even as investors reckoned with another day's selloff in Europe. The Dow Jones Stoxx 600 fell 2.7% to 263.50, a three-year low, and London's FTSE 100 sank 3.5% to 176.60. Before it ended the day, the U.K. index dropped below 5,000 for the first time since June 2005....
